The Lake District is the perfect backdrop for cyclists, and luckily for them, there are so many locations that make wonderful cycling routes for beginners and the more experienced. Or, if you don’t own a bike, you can hire them across the Lake District, as bikes, tagalongs and bike trailers are available at Coniston Boating Centre. You could even hire a bike at Brockhole on the shores of Windermere and enjoy the routes available on the Windermere Lake Cruises bike boat.
There are also electric bikes for hire at Coniston Boating Centre, and handily, if you run out of battery or need a top-up, you can pop by one of the Electric Bike Network charge points at various locations around the area.
One popular route is the Eskdale TRail which is 14km (8 and a half miles) and a mixture of country lanes, stony and earthy tracks and grass fields. The gradient is gradually downwards apart from the challenging climb up Chapel Hill.
For those feeling daring, there’s also the Fred Whitton Challenge, a 112-mile sportive road cycling challenge ride for charity around the Lake District. We’ve just missed the event, which takes place in May, but you can keep an eye on the Fred Whitton Challenge for details of the event and how to enter when it opens again next year.
