    Easy Rambling

One of the best things about The Lake District is all the walks, and whether you like four hours of brutal uphill or something rather more leisurely there's something to suit any ability or preference.

Tarn Howes is a very popular spot all year round and it’s easy to see why, not only has it got spectacular scenery but its 1-2 hours of easy and enjoyable rambling.

The walk to Tarn Hows starts from the car park at Glen Mary Bridge. Before reaching Tarn Hows there is a short walk through Lane End Coppice and Harry Field Wood, the walk goes along a narrow path up some stunning waterfalls. It can be a bit slippy so take care! Arriving at Tarn Hows you will see the beautiful lake and can choose paths that do a circular route in both directions.

Don’t forget, after a lovely day out walking you can always pop into our sister hotel, The Regent, for a lovely home cooked meal.

  • February is the month of love and what better way to feel the love than with a getaway to the Lake District?

The Lakes is arguably the most romantic place in the UK (we certainly think so anyway!) and there are so many things you can do with your other half to celebrate your love together.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in a beautiful setting, take a look at our room choices here at Lakes Lodge. While we offer something for everyone, our superior rooms certainly have that special sparkle if you’re looking for somewhere extraordinary to stay.

You can choose from The Bluebird Suite, The Hilltop Suite, The Daffodils Suite and The Ruskin Suite. All feature king size Sealey beds which are manufactured locally to the highest standard, with contemporary décor by local interior designer Sarah Nielsen, a flat screen TV and DVD player and free high speed wi-fi access.

If you’re venturing out and about during your stay in the Lake District, we think the view from Friars Crag is worth taking the trip to Keswick. A favourite of John Ruskin, he once said Keswick was a place almost too beautiful to live in. A stunning setting in any weather, from Friars Crag you can sit on the bench and gaze out across Derwentwater and enjoy one of the most magnificent views in the Lake District.

Of course, there are a number of lovely walking trails and superb spots in the Lakes – in fact, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to spectacular scenery and enjoyable walks. As well as Friars Crag, our other favourite romantic spots include Buttermere, Loweswater, Colwith Falls in Elterwater, Ennerdale Water, and Blea Tarn in the Langdale Valley.

During your trip, you could enjoy a decadent afternoon and treat yourselves to one of the many fabulous locations across the Lakes that do a wonderful afternoon tea. Some of our favourites include Rothay Manor (Ambleside), Sharrow Bay (Ullswater), Gillam’s (Ulverston), Holbeck Ghyll and Linthwaite House (both Windermere).

If you would like a souvenir of your romantic getaway, Love the Lakes is a small chain (with shops in Keswick and Bowness) that sells beautiful Lake District themed gifts. Everything for sale is produced in Cumbria, and you can pick up all sorts of delights, including candles and home fragrance, toiletries such as bath oils and soaps, tasty tipples like local vodka and gin, and gorgeous jewellery and accessories.

  • It’s now December which means the Christmas countdown has officially begun!

And what better Christmas present than a trip to the Lake District this festive season?

While the Lakes is superb in the summer, you can’t beat coming here in the winter. Just picture the scene – wrapping up warm and going walking with stunning backdrops for views, then refuelling in a cosy pub or restaurant with a glass of mulled wine, a slap-up meal and a mince pie for dessert. Then coming back to Lakes Lodge and getting nice and snug in a warm and comfy suite, ready for a good night’s sleep.

    Sounds rather lovely, doesn’t it?

We certainly think so. And luckily, the Lake District has a number of brilliant things to do for all the family, whether it’s dry and sunny, or chilly and rainy.

When it comes to arts and culture, there’s plenty to choose from – and many offer free entry for kids. Favourites include Sizergh Castle, Blackwell, Holker Hall and Levens Hall. And of course, there’s Dove Cottage and The Wordsworth Museum in Grasmere. There’s also the Lakeland Motor Museum, the Laurel and Hardy Museum, and The World of Beatrix Potter.

Zeffirellis Cinema and Jazz Cafe Bar is close by Lakes Lodge in Ambleside. Offering two multi-screen cinema, showing the latest releases, there’s also a great café, bar and an award-winning pizzeria.

Or if you fancy wrapping up and braving the winter weather, there are many wonderful walks to choose from. The National Trust has put together a great list here, including Derwentwater and Brandelhow, Tom Gill to Tarn Hows, and the Windermere western shore.

If you need accommodation for your winter getaway, look no further than Lakes Lodge – we’re in the perfect location for a Lake District weekend. Get in touch here to book your accommodation.
